The next Blue Moon Swing dance is only a week away: Thursday, July 8th, 2011.
Some new items of note:
First, I’m adding in a new feature at 7:30pm for beginners called Duct Tape Taxi Dancing, each month, so beginners have more practice time with experienced dancers. Get more info or see how you can volunteer to help out.
Second, as I’m short a pro teacher this month, I’m going to try something different by giving a short presentation at 8pm on swing itself: If you ever wondered what swing is (musically), or how to recognize it in songs, or what a swing rhythm implies for choosing whether you should west coast, or east coast, or country swing, or lindy, etc., then this is a rare chance to get a quick overview of your favorite dance from the musical side for a change.
I’ve done this several times before at universities and for dance groups, and they all seem to love it — I think it’s because more people have had some music training than have had formal dance training. Uh, especially the guys. And dance talented pros “get” this so deeply on an unconscious level that I’m convinced they think it’s self-obvious and forget ordinary folk like us need things explained a more explicitly.
Anyway, let me emphasize this is a short preso on musical rhythms, not a dance lesson. I’m hoping you’ll come away with more awareness of what Swing is in a way that will help your dance joy.
Please note that the dance lessons with pro teachers returns in August with Gary McIntyre and in September with Angel Figueroa, neither to be missed!
Lastly, the issue with the A/C is fixed. The bar simply turned it on too late for the coolness to kick in in time for the dance, although those intrepid dancers who stayed late certainly enjoyed it! Management assures me it will get turned on earlier now and in the future.
